The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is a 2013 epic high fiction adventure film directed by Peter Jackson and produced by WingNut Films in association with New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Warner Bros. Pictures also serves as distributor of this second installment in a three-part film series based on J.R.R.’s novel The Hobbit. Tolkien. The film was preceded by An Unexpected Journey (2012), followed by The Battle of the Five Armies (2014); together they acted as a prequel to the Jackson film trilogy The Lord of the Rings.
The film follows the main character Bilbo Baggins as he accompanies Thorin Oak Shield and his fellow dwarves on their quest to reclaim Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. The film also includes Azog the Defiler’s and Bolg’s vengeful pursuits as Gandalf the Gray investigates a growing evil in the ruins of Dol Guldur. The cast includes Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lily, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt and Orlando Bloom.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug premiered in Los Angeles on December 2, 2013 and was released internationally on December 11, 2013 in conventional and IMAX theaters. The film received mostly positive reviews and grossed over US$959 million at the worldwide box office, surpassing The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers to become the fourth highest-grossing film of 2013.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Movie Plot
Gandalf and Thorin’s Oak Shield meet on a jumping pony and Gandalf convinces Thorin to take back Erebor and Lonely Mountain. Twelve months later, following the events of the previous film, Thorin and company are pursued by Azog and his orc group. Gandalf takes them to the nearby house of Beorn, a skin mutation that can take the form of a bear. That night, Azog is summoned to Dol Guldur by the Necromancer, who orders him to organize his troops for battle. Azog then delegated the Turin hunt to his son Bolg. The next day, Beorn escorts the company to the borders of Mirkwood, where Gandalf finds Black Speech imprinted in ancient ruins. This and a previous request from Galadriel prompted him to investigate the Nazgul tomb. He warns the company to stay on track and abandon them.
